Occupying the southern flank of the Haut-Brion gravelly hillside and capable of exceptional success in "small" vintages, La Mission is a powerful first growth in a more fleshy and opulent register than Haut-Brion. Proof of this is its formidable 2017 rated 96/100 by M. Galloni (Vinous) "Effortless, graceful and wonderfully nuanced, this 2017 simply has everything going for it. What a wine". As for the 2016, rated 99/100 by N. Martin (Vinous), critics compare it to the dazzling 1989, no less!

Revue du Vin de France : 94-96/100 « La fraîcheur qui s’impose crescendo surprend après la suavité aromatique du nez et le moelleux de l’attaque en bouche. La matière ne devient jamais massive bien que le vin s’affirme en largeur. C’est indéniablement un grand vin de garde, centré sur la vitalité davantage que sur la puissance alcoolique, sur le muscle davantage que sur la chair. »
Bettane & Desseauve : 95-96/100 ♥ Coup de cœur « Charnu et velouté, grand style et grande maîtrise de vinification propre à l’équipe, tout à fait conforme à ce que le millésime pouvait donner sur ce terroir. » « Moelleux en entrée de bouche et surtout doté d'un gras fin comparable au toucher d'un vin blanc sec, le vin fond au palais. Il gagne de la trame entre le milieu et la finale et s'achève long, subtil, sur des saveurs complexes. C'est à la fois très bon et très différent parmi les vins rouges de Bordeaux. »

Galloni : 92-95/100 « The 2023 La Mission Haut-Brion is a dense, powerful wine. Firm tannins give the 2023 a feeling of sternness-a sense of classical austerity that is beguiling. This is the second-most tannic vintage for La Mission, only surpassed by 2010, so readers should plan on being patient. It will be interesting to see what élevage brings. At this stage, the 2023 is quite the bruiser. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The 2023 La Mission Haut-Brion has a wonderful bouquet with brightness and verve: very well-defined red and black fruit, a little floral in style, maybe not as rambunctious as recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins. A perfect line of acidity counterbalances the creamy texture, turning quite plush toward the finish, but it is amazingly well-focused. »
