Phélan-Ségur is one of Saint-Estèphe's historic estates, with a 70-hectare vineyard on the front line of the Gironde estuary, bordered to the north by Calon-Ségur and to the south by Meyney and Montrose. The arrival in 2018 of a new Belgian owner (Mr. Van de Vyvere) ushered in a new era and new ambitions at Phélan-Ségur: 20 hectares under organic management, braiding of the vines (instead of trimming), gradual reduction in planting density to 8,000 vines/ha to combat summer drought, sparing use of sulfur, parcel-by-parcel vinification using indigenous yeasts...

Recent vintages have been very convincing, with racy wines combining intensity, vinosity and finesse in the image of Calon-Ségur.

Revue du Vin de France : 93-94/100 « Les cabernets (60 % de l’assemblage), de belle maturité, apportent la colonne vertébrale au vin. Ce 2023 est racé, profond, avec un fruit expressif et un très joli grain de tanins. Bien enrobé, il offre une très longue finale. »
Bettane & Desseauve : 95/100 ♥ Coup de cœur « Le cru s’est surpassé et les efforts des années précédentes ont porté leurs fruits. Le corps, la noblesse aromatique des cabernets et l’exactitude dans l’extraction du tannin peuvent servir de modèle. »
Le Point : 17.5-18/20 ♥ Coup de cœur « Réglisse, tabac blond, cerise, bouche droite, juteuse, gourmande et fine à la fois. Bien persistant. »
Quarin : 91/100 « Touche de fruits noirs et de vanille. Délicat à l'attaque, raffiné au milieu, avec un toucher soyeux, le vin se développe parfumé. Il présente un déroulé plus tempéré que parfois qui favorise une perception plus allongée que je préfère. Jolie longueur sans boisé, sans marquer le tannin. »
Galloni : 92-94/100 « The 2023 Phélan Ségur is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, plum, gravel, incense, licorice, dried herbs, lavender and mocha infuse the 2023 with striking complexity. Persistent saline notes lend energy, dimension and shape. The Cabernet Sauvignon really screams with intensity here. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins. This is very well balanced, though not a Phélan Ségur laden with huge concentration [...]. There is just a touch of balsamic that perks up the finish, while graphite notes join the chorus line toward the close. Quite an "involving" wine in the cards, this will be fascinating to revisit once in bottle. »
