Since its acquisition in 1998 by Mr. De Neipperg (Clos de l'Oratoire, Canon-La Gaffelière, La Mondotte), d'Aiguilhe has been part of the new generation of very ambitious wines that bring the appellation of the Côtes de Castillon to a new level. It has just won a second star in the 2023 guide of the Revue du Vin de France.
Revue du Vin de France : 92-93/100 « Un ravissant nez éclatant de mûre, de fruits noirs et une aromatique très bien définie. La trame calcaire jaillit immédiatement. Un équilibre svelte, une trame ciselée, tout en ayant une certaine tendresse de chair.»
Bettane & Desseauve : 91/100 « Ample et charnu, ce vin ne manque pas de distinction, on apprécie son soyeux, avec en finale des accents de menthe poivrée qui équilibrent l’ensemble. »
Galloni : 90-92/100 « The 2023 d'Aiguilhe is packed with blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice. Bright saline notes lend freshness and verve. The vibrancy of the flavors is really quite striking. »
Martin : 90-92/100 « There is a sense of airiness on the nose deriving from the limestone/clay soil-just a little diffuse. Maybe barrel-aging with bind the aromatics together. The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure. It's quite foursquare, demonstrating more complexity than the preceding Clos Marsalette, with fine delineation and mineralité on the finish. From 2005, La Dominique, prestigious terroir adjacent to Cheval Blanc, L'Évangile and La Conseillante, returns in great shape. His velvety and sensual style places him halfway between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol : “the tannin texture is very Pomerol-like, then the silky, floral, firm follow-through continues with the class of the great Saint-Emilions” (Bettane & Desseauve).
Revue du Vin de France : 90-92/100 « Une prise de bois un peu forte à ce stade. La bouche se montre plus en forme. Une matière enveloppée par une agréable suavité, une structure tannique douce donnant du liant à cette finale dotée d’une belle acidité. Un vin bien façonné pour séduire le plus grand nombre. C’est une qualité! »
Bettane & Desseauve : 94/100 ♥ Coup de cœur « Nez salivant, dans son registre frais et intense. Tannin enrobé, bouche équilibrée, mettant bien en perspective la belle maturité du fruit. Un millésime mûr et frais, avec beaucoup de personnalité. »

Quarin : 91/100 « Jolie entrée en bouche minutieuse, se développant savoureuse au milieu, avec un toucher fin. Le vin glisse, caresse et s'achève sur une longueur normale, sans marquer le tannin. »
Galloni : 92-94/100 « The 2023 La Dominique is powerful, rich and deep, but without sacrificing aromatic presence. Hints of black cherry, spice, new leather and licorice unfurl in the glass, lending plenty of striking, even exotic, beauty. A successful vintage for this venerable Saint-Émilion. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The 2023 La Dominique has a well-defined bouquet: a mixture of red and black fruit, undergrowth and wilted rose petals. This is a much more refined example from the estate. The palate is medium-bodied with mocha-tinged fruit and moderate depth, quite old school in style with a touch of leather on the finish. It's fine, but I would like just a tad more vivacity by the time of bottling. A second bottle toward the end of my tastings showed better than the first. »More- To keep or to drink:

Since 2010, Claire Villars (also at Ferrière and La Gurgue), puts back in the saddle Haut-Bages Liberal. With a qualitative terroir (adjacent to Latour), this certified organic wine since 2019 has become, for a reasonable price, the good deal of Pauillac.
Revue du Vin de France : 92-93/100 « Le cru s’affine année après année et gagne en précision. Le 2023 est très bien constitué, avec une matière serrée, un fruit lumineux, de très beaux tanins et du potentiel. L’élevage est bien calé. »
Bettane & Desseauve : 92/100 « Souple et onctueux, avec ce qu’il faut de rebond et de finesse, un pauillac qui a du potentiel. »
Le Point : 17/20 « Fruits rouges, bouche douce, élégeante, tanins fins, pimentés, vin droit, savoureux. Joli pauillac bien équilibré, long. »
Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2023 Haut-Bages Libéral is fabulous. Deep, layered and exquisitely beautiful, the 2023 bristles with tension. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, leather, menthol and licorice grace a wine of depth, richness and sensuality. It's a terrific effort from proprietor Claire Villars-Lurton. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The nose was quite backward when I tasted it, though Claire Villars-Lurton commented that it had just closed down the week that I visited. It will be more open once in bottle. The palate is more indicative: clean, fresh, linear and nicely focused, with more grip than the Ferrière. Touches of graphite linger on the finish. This is very classically styled, and there is nothing wrong with that-a wine for Pauillac purists and those seeking wines with less sulfites. »More- To keep or to drink:

In organic conversion from 2013, Durfort-Vivens was one of the very first classified growths in the Médoc to claim and display organic certification from 2016. M. Bettane is one of its most fervent defenders: "the quality/price ratio remains absolutely unique at this level of quality of terroir and work.

Galloni : 92-95/100 « The 2023 Durfort-Vivens is a very pretty, understated wine. In 2023, Durfort is marked by a brighter profile than usual: red fruit, blood orange and flowers. Medium in body and persistent, with good energy and very fine balance, the 2023 is promising. Even though it's showing a touch of oak at this stage, this layered and sumptuous offering is showing well. »More- To keep or to drink:

A small Margaux classified growth (24 ha), Ferrière is a traditional Margaux, frank and pleasant, moderately powerful but perfectly balanced. Its capacity for ageing is undeniable. Certified organicsince 2015, Ferrière was doubly certified biodynamic in 2018, with the Biodyvin and Demeter labels. Awarded Best Winemaker of the Year 2024 by Revue du Vin de France, Claire Villars-Lurtonet has pushed her Margaux cru to the top. Bravo!

Galloni : 92-94/100 « The 2023 Ferrière is a hugely promising wine. At this early stage, 2023 looks like a wine of notable refinement. Ferrière is typically a big Margaux with large-grained tannins, but that is not the case at all with 2023. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol abound. Claire Lurton likes to present this wine from tank, before the wine is put into wood, in order to show the quality of the fruit. »
Martin : 91-93/100 « It has a very precise bouquet, understated in style, with blackberry and bilberry fruit laced with cedar. The palate is medium- bodied with crisp black fruit on the entry, quite spicy and peppery in style. It's a more vivacious Ferrière compared to other vintages, closing with a smooth and harmonious finish. This is a lovely Margaux from Claire Lurton. »More- To keep or to drink:

Totally surrounded by classified growths, La Gurgue enjoys a privileged terroir, and the attentive care of Mrs Villars (also owner of Ferrière, classified growth of Margaux, and Haut-Bages-Libéral, classified growth of Pauillac), voted Winemaker of the Year 2024 by La Revue du Vin de France. Certainly the best quality/price/pleasure ratio in the appellation.

Galloni : 89-91/100 « The 2023 La Gurgue offers very good depth but is less expressive aromatically than it often is. Strong Cabernet Sauvignon inflections lend plenty of character. There's a bit of tightness in the tannins that suggests heat stress may have been an issue. I am very interested to see what elevage does here. »
Martin : 89-91/100 « The 2023 Clos Floridène Blanc has a lively and well-defined bouquet with yellow fruit, Granny Smith and light stony aromas. The palate is fresh and crisp with grapefruit and orange rind notes. It's a little pithier than its peers, with a slightly resinous finish. Fine. »More- To keep or to drink:

L'Esprit de Chevalier follows the same path as a great wine: an increasingly fine structure, a remarkable qualitative evolution in recent vintages, and an ever-relevant quality-price ratio.
Martin : 91-93/100 « The 2023 L'Esprit de Chevalier has a refined yet focused bouquet with black cherries, wild strawberries, touches of camphor and Provençal herbs, all delivered with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins on the entry, but it immediately segues into a surprisingly structured and grippy mid-palate. Quite bold for an Esprit, with a dash of white pepper on the finish. »

Built on freshness and tension, Esprit de Chevalier distinguishes itself from the appellation's other second wines by its extra smoothness and remarkable aromatic richness (green mango, citrus fruit, white peach...). The development of a third wine is undoubtedly no stranger to this.
Martin : 95-97/100 « The 2023 L'Esprit de Chevalier Blanc offers crisp sea-spray scents on the nose, complemented by Granny Smiths and light kiwi notes. The palate is very well balanced with a keen line of acidity. Notably saline on the entry, it possesses impressive depth, turning quite spicy with touches of white pepper on the persistent finish. This is one of those Deuxième Vins where you think: "Cor blimey...what's the Grand Vin like?" »

Mr. Derenoncourt's arrival as a consultant in 2006 has given the Domaine de Chevalier an extra touch of charm and softness, while preserving its distinguished finesse. Its success has been dazzling in recent vintages, gradually raising it to the pinnacle of the appellation.
Revue du Vin de France : 93-95/100 « La matière ne bombe pas inutilement le torse. Parfumée, charmeuse, elle déroule en souplesse, mais sans creux ni hésitation. Très convaincant, l’échantillon se place sans baisse de régime dans l’impressionnant crescendo des rouges de Chevalier. Déjà complexe, racé, ce dernier millésime s’exprime de façon très articulée et promet un plaisir (relativement) précoce. »
Bettane & Desseauve : 95/100 ♥ Coup de cœur « Élégant, complexe, maturité, très juste extraction du tannin et boisé travaillé et intégré, un rien en dessous de la plénitude absolue du 2022. Beau style et avenir assuré. »
Le Point : 18/20 « Nez frais, fruité pur, cerise, juteux, tanins serrés, matière riche. Très racé et élégant, élevage harmonieux. »
Quarin : 94/100 « Nez très aromatique, au fruité frais. Minutieux en entrée de bouche, savoureux au milieu et bien constitué, le vin évolue juteux et velouté dans la seconde partie du palais. Il s'achève ascendant et très bon. »
Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier is beautifully resonant in the glass. Deep, layered and quite persistent, the 2023 has so much to offer. In many vintages, this red needs time to be at its best, but this edition has enough forward fruit to make me think it will drink well with minimal cellaring, even if the acids remain brisk. [...] The 2023 is all finesse. »
Martin : 94-96/100 « This is quintessential "DdC" on the nose: black fruit, sous-bois and hints of black olive at first, subtle marine notes emerging with time in the glass. There's wonderful focus and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pencil-shaving-tinged black fruit on the entry. In white, Domaine de Chevalier produces a model unique among its peers, made of tension, vivacity and energy. Its mineral side and its capacity to age (30 years and more) bring it closer to the greatest Burgundy whites.

Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is one of the best dry whites of the year. Creamy and expansive, with terrific brightness, this exudes balance. [...] I expect it will offer exceptional drinking for the next several decades. »
Martin : 94-96/100 « This has wonderful purity on the nose, revealing scents of lime, green apple and crushed stone-one of the most precise I have encountered at this early stage. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity that lends this white Pessac-Léognan superb focus. There's real intensity here, building with a sense of nascent confidence toward the mineral, almost slate-like finish. Emblematic cru of the Médoc by its architecture as well as by the delicacy of its wines, internationally sought-after. Beychevelle has taken another step up in finesse and aromatic precision with the commissioning in 2018 of its new vat room, and is now on first-name terms with the commune's second growths.

Bettane & Desseauve : 95-96/100 ♥ Coup de cœur « Remarquable finesse et subtilité aromatique, corps délicat et plein, admirable sensation tactile du tannin. Il a tout le charme propre au grand vin du château. »

Quarin : 94/100 « La bouche est celle du Beychevelle que j'attends, brillante pour ses arômes sophistiqués, au risque à cet âge que le corps ne soit pas à son maximum. La distinction générale enchante le buveur, plus encore en finale lorsque le grain du tannin se montre fin et lui aussi aromatique. »
Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2023 Beychevelle is fabulous. [...] This juicy, extroverted Saint-Julien has a ton to offer. The combination of fruit intensity, acid and supporting structure is superb. The 2023 is showy, but not at all overdone. Beychevelle remains one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux. It is especially classy in this edition. »

Alongside its famous Sauternes, Suduiraut has been producing for 20 years now a dry white wine for gourmets, made from 45-year-old vines and aged entirely in barrels.
Bettane & Desseauve : 94/100 « Très harmonieux dans ses équilibres, ses fines notes végétales, ses parfums d’agrumes frais et la manière dont s’intégre son acidité. Une vraie personnalité et une pleine réussite dans ce millésime. »
Quarin : 93/100 « Nez très aromatique, fruité, frais, subtil et légèrement vanillé. Juteux et soyeux dès l'entrée en bouche, aromatique et minutieux dans sa texture, le vin fond au palais. Il évolue lentement vers une finale profonde, bien difficile à cracher. C'est superbe. »
Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2023 Grand Vin Blanc Sec Vieilles Vignes is superb. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, sage, mint and dried flowers all run through this super-expressive, savory dry white. There's real phenolic intensity to the Vieilles Vignes-a rich, deep white for the dinner table. Pretty floral top notes and a kick of tropical fruit brighten the finish. »
Martin : 90-92/100 « The 2023 Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes has a lifted bouquet with scents of orange pith, lemon verbena and light patisserie scents-finely delineated. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and lightly spiced with a tangy, austere but engaging finish. There's just a hint of stem ginger on the aftertaste. »More- To keep or to drink:

Always of a high standard for a reasonable price (in Pomerol), the wines of Gazin, medium-bodied and marked by truffles, are the archetype of the appellation and of exemplary consistency vintage after vintage. “One of Pomerol's best wines, with happy surprises after 10 years” for Bettane & Desseauve as for us.
Revue du Vin de France : 95-97/100 « Sa puissance diffuse est pénétrée par une grande intensité saline et citronnée, le tout cerclé par des tanins patinés et voluptueux. La matière trouve le juste équilibre entre un délié longiligne et une enveloppe gourmande, tout en gardant une empreinte terrienne. Ce léger changement de style offre un résultat bluffant. Bravo ! »

Galloni : 91-93/100 « The 2023 Gazin is deep, layered and exceptionally well-balanced. All the elements are in the right place. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and dried herbs all meld together in a seamless, super-expressive Pomerol that hints at a very bright future. »
Martin : 91-93/100 « The 2023 Gazin has a typical bouquet for this Pomerol estate-always understated, and one where you have to spend time coaxing aromas. Eventually, it offers predominantly black fruit laced with black truffles and light earthy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It veers more toward red fruit laced with white pepper on the cohesive and classically styled finish. This is maybe not a long-term Gazin, but it has an air of sophistication. »More- To keep or to drink:

Even though it is not classified, Siran has been in competition with the classified growths of Margaux for the last ten years, with wines that are at once delicate, firm and full-bodied with age. Aligning successes since 2015, Siran is now at its best, 2020 being its best vintage ever and hailed as such by the Revue du Vin de France: « réussite majeure pour le cru », rated 95/100.
The label for the 2022 vintage, by Italian artist Pietro Gallo, illustrates the technological revolution brought about by Artificial Intelligence.
Revue du Vin de France : 92-93/100 « Le château enchaîne une belle série de millésimes. 2023 est dans une veine plutôt charnue et mûre, à dominante de merlot, tout en préservant le croquant et la fraîcheur du fruit. Un vin de bel équilibre à la structure tannique bien intégrée. »
Le Point : 17/20 « Fruits noirs, bouche dense, riche, réglisse, tanins présents. Du fond, long, bien construit. »
Quarin : 89/100 « Couleur sombre. Nez intense, fin, pur, fruité. Touche de fruits noirs. Délicat en entrée de bouche, soyeux dans son déroulé, le vin fond au palais, très agréable sur une longueur normale et savoureuse. »
Galloni : 87-89/100 « The 2023 Siran is a rich, earthy Margaux. Cherry, tobacco, dried herbs and scorched earth add to an impression of rustic, wild power. This Siran has a ton of power, but incisive tannins give an impression of untamed intensity. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The 2023 Siran has a well-defined bouquet that is not as complex as the previous vintage. It is focused and delineated, with black fruit mixed with graphite and melted tar, almost Saint-Julien in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite minerally and lively without the depth of the 2022, yet rather elegant and refined on the finish. This constitutes a very gracious Margaux and as I tried second and third bottles towards the end of my trip, it just seemed to get better and better. »More- To keep or to drink:

In the commune of Preignac, Suduiraut offers a wine that reflects its geographical position: halfway between Sauternes and Barsac. The latest vintages are dazzling in terms of contained power and aromatic distinction.
According to Bettane & Desseauve (Guide 2025), “Yquem is the only wine that can still do a little better”.
Revue du Vin de France : 96-98/100 « Après le monumental et atypique 2022, Suduiraut revient en 2023 à des mensurations plus classiques. Complet, très serein, l’échantillon définit magnifiquement l’identité du cru : une sensation de glycérol unique, une richesse davantage fondée sur la matière, le gras, le velouté de la chair, que sur le sucre. Distingué dans tous ses détails, posé dans sa prestance et son éloquence, c’est un seigneur. »
Bettane & Desseauve : 97-98/100 ♥ Coup de cœur « Monumental une nouvelle fois par sa richesse en liqueur mais aussi son suprême équilibre, avec déjà les notes d’agrumes, orange et mandarine, qui font sa spécificité entre tous les premiers crus de Sauternes. »
Le Point : 16.5/20 « Pêche jaune, botrytisé, plein, gras, ananas, puissant, riche. »
Quarin : 96/100 « Nez intense, fin, fruité et subtil. Minutieux en entrée de bouche, particulièrement aromatique au milieu. Pour la première fois ce vin évolue en donnant l'impression d'être d'abord un grand vin blanc et ensuite un grand vin blanc liquoreux. Ensemble minutieux, subtil et profond, particulièrement difficile à cracher. »

We no longer present Sociando-Mallet, which should be in a good place in the cellar of any wine lover, as the quality and above all the regularity of its last thirty vintages are so impressive. Without wishing to underestimate the hard work of the late Mr Gautreau since 1969, it must be said that the terroir, against the Gironde on a gravelly ridge comparable to that of Montrose, is indeed that of a Grand Cru Classé. Unavoidable 2016, the greatest wine of Sociando-Mallet since 1996.

Located at the northern tip of the Médoc, the vineyard of Château La Goulée was abandoned in 2007 when Cos d'Estournel acquired it. The aim was to produce an intensely flavoursome, tasty and charming wine thanks to an almost (90%) pure Merlot grape variety.
The contract was perfectly fulfilled with this magnificent 2019, a real delicacy rated 92/100 by M. Galloni (Vinous).

Previously settled on firm tannins that made them stark in their youth, Cos Labory's wines have for the last ten years changed in style, becoming more pleasant and gaining in depth and refinement (its vineyard is adjacent to those of Lafite-Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel). “Probably the best value in the 1855 classification to date”, as Bettane & Desseauve (Guide 2025) points out.
The Audoy family having sold its vineyard to the neighboring Cos d'Estournel at the beginning of 2023, a new era begins at Cos Labory.

Martin : 89-91/100 « The 2023 Cos Labory is the first vintage made completely by Michel Reybier's team. The 2023 went through a parcel selection and use of peristaltic pumps. It has a slightly richer and more decadent bouquet, perhaps reflecting the summer heat more than Cos d'Estournel. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannins, fleshy in style but there is satisfying structure in situ. Quite marine-influenced towards the finish with a tangy peppery aftertaste. Since 1985, Pape Clément has magnificently combined the bouquet and natural finesse of the Graves with the power of its terroir (comparable to that of the greatest Pauillac wines). Fombrauge, the largest vineyard in Saint-Émilion with 57 hectares, has been offering since its purchase by Mr. Magrez (1997) structured wines that do not deny their terroir, full, gourmet and devilishly seductive thanks to a luxurious maturing process.

There's plenty of the textural richness Bernard Magrez loves, but it's just a bit tempered compared to previous years. Succulent red cherry, plum, rose petal, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha infuse the 2023 with notable depth. Bright acids refresh the palate nicely. »

On a magnificent gravelly hillock that has nothing to envy that of its neighbour Montrose, Meyney (Crédit Agricole property) is a serious candidate for the title of best Médoc bourgeois cru in each vintage. Long, complex, refined, distinguished tannins: a great Médoc cut for long ageing. Recommended by Mr. De Boüard (Angelus) from the 2014 vintage.
