Administered by the Rothschilds (Mouton) since 1996, Coutet has joined the leading pack of the biggest Sauternes after Yquem. Like Climens, it is a true Barsac, pure and remarkably subtle, but with a more marked liquor. Since 2005, Coutet has been in great shape! In a rare feat, the exceptional 2020 vintage came top (ahead of Yquem) in the Revue du Vin de France's ranking of Sauternes 2020 « un sommet de pureté, de précoce harmonie, de naturel ! ».

The 2020 vintage in the press:

La Revue du Vin de France (Guide 2025): 98/100 “Coutet 2020, still very expressive, exuberant and superiorly distinguished, giving primacy of expression to fresh fruit. Tonic from start to finish, as generous as it is generous, it hides the opulence of its liqueur behind the obviousness and charm of radiant youth, so enjoy!”

Vinous (N.Martin - January 2024): 93/100 “The 2020 Coutet has a promising nose with dried honey, nectarine, Clementine and saffron scents, though it doesn't quite have the complexity of the best Sauternes. The palate is well balanced with a tangy opening, fine depth and better acidity than others in this flight. Marmalade and quince tones emerge toward the finish as this lingers nicely in the mouth. Very fine.”

La Revue du Vin de France, ranked 1st among Sauternes 2020 (September 2023): 98/100 “Coutet 2020 is very racy from the outset, even if it gives pride of place to fresh fruit in this vintage with little botrytization. Tonic from start to finish, it hides the opulence of its liqueur behind this obvious fruit. A summit of purity, precocious harmony and naturalness”.

The 2016 vintage in the press:

Vinous (N.Martin - February 2024): 91/100 “The 2016 Coutet is a vintage that I am ambivalent towards. It feels a little strict and lean on the nose, missing the presence and concentration of the previous vintage. The palate is well balanced with quince and tangerine, with moderate depth, yet it needs more acidity and bite on the finish.”

J-M Quarin (March 2019): 93/100 “Yellow color with green highlights. Very aromatic, spicy and complex nose. Caressing on the attack, juicy on development, very aromatic, the wine melts on the palate, tasty, long and very charming. Very good.”

The 2012 vintage in the press:

Vinous (N.Martin - February 2022): 92/100 “The 2012 Coutet is well-defined with wild honey, acacia and honeysuckle notes, not amazingly complex but pure. The palate is well balanced with a viscous entry, fine acidity, plenty of botrytis here with a slightly tangy finish. Fine cohesion here, this should drink well for 15 years or so.”

Away from fashions and deliberately away from rankings, Coutet is a unique estate: a 13-hectare vineyard (planted exclusively with autochthonous massal selection, old vines up to 100 years old) that has never known any phytosanitary products, owned since the 18th century by the same family (David-Beaulieu, 14th generation). Surrounded by prestigious neighbors (between Angélus, Grand-Mayne and the two Beauséjour), Coutet produces fine wines without artifice, fleshy and deep without being massive, finely extracted without dryness or tannic hardness. An authentic cru, particularly endearing in its family and eco-citizen approach.
